Some say one can divide the bridge world into 2 groups : those who keep on playing the bridge system they have learned and those who are a bit more critical and often ask themselves if things can not be improved. One thing is sure: the "perfect" bridge system does not exist. The existing systems are as good as you apply them. Mainly you can reach in any system - if well applied - the correct game contract . Differences might occur in finding optimal part score contracts and slams.
This site is meant for those advanced bridgers who are "open" for new ideas and who dare to leave old dogma's on a road of creative thinking.
Convinced that one does not has to be a bridge world champion to be able to think about and question existing bridge systems, the brothers Vannuten started a few years ago a challinging trip in the world of bridge systems hoping to find an optimal mix and to construct a tool that enables bridgers to bid as much as possible given hands leading to the correct contract. This led to a new modular bridge system where existing conventions were screened and new ones were created, tested and tuned.
These ‘system-engineers’ learned on their way that simplicity is a very important value and so constantly a balance has been searched between theory and practice : the bridger must be able to reconstruct at the table the answering scheme's supported by algorithms and patterns, making the system manageable for the own side and difficult to follow by the opponents.
It became a rough and difficult journey with a lot of pittfalls, accidents and lessons learned. Both engineers realize the unique context of their journey : 2 brothers with the same interests in this mind game, together in the same car in long traffic cues towards their work giving long discussing hours. Next, also several books and internet sites were consulted in order to avoid duplication.
Convinced about the added values of the multi - principle ( more than one handtype in a single bid) and about the transfer-principle (announcing a suit by bidding just below that suit) , it was logical to baptise the new system as MUTOS : MUlti and Transfer Oriented System.
The starting point was Strong Clubs , related to Precision. Between that starting point and the current presented version, the brothers have created and defined 5 to 6 playable systems that all havebeen thoroughly tested out. After a deep evaluation, end 2007, the 1 opening was rewritten in such a way that little was left from the original concept. MUTOS has arrived in an ending phase.... The end of a journey.
Although said many times before as well, the authors are confident that the fundamentals are stable. Therefore, it was felt right to adapt the internet site about MUTOS, and to adjust it to the version of 2009.
In 2010 an improvement was introduced into the 1♦ opening, with great impact on the 1♦ handling and also on the 1NT-opening. Also a new strategy for partners weak hands was elaborated what led basicly to a new system, that we baptized as JAZZ.
Eventually, bridge is not an easy thing to read about and to acquire : it is and remains a mind game where every situation, every sequence of events, every card is important. Take your time, reread paragraphs, open your mind and an exciting new world can open .
The book ( Dutch) and this site were made in a modest way to enable others to enjoy the result.
